mamma

Keywords: address, endearment

Pronunciation (IPA): mam.ma
Part of Speech: term noun
Class: address
Forms: mamma, ma
Glosses: mother, mom, mommy, ma, mama, lady

Description:

The term mamma is exclusively ever used as a noun, and rarely derived in any way. More grammatiically versatile uses would tend to go to the formal term for parent, anno (attached) instead. Mamma was borrowed from various languages Common was in contact with during the late early and middle periods. It is used as an intimate term or term of affection for one's mother. It is often shortened to 'ma'. Compare to its masculine equivalent, 'pappa', attached.

In slangy Common, especially in Pacific rim States and hence in a lot of global pop culture as well, mamma can also just be an informal word for a female human, more often an adult who looks old enough to actually be a mother, having a sense like 'lady'.
