Common Lexeme

polit

Keywords: gender, gender identity, family, relatives, social rank, politeness

Pronunciation (IPA): 'po'lit
Part of Speech: term noun
Class:
Forms: polit
Glosses: nephew, niece

Description:

The term 'polit' refers to nephews and nieces. It can take any of the gender derivations that any of the other relatonship terms can. There is less of a tendency to apply an intrinsic gender prefixes with polit, because the intrinsic forms have become associated with prostitution, but they can be used successfully in a non-offensive way for their literal meanings of niece and nephew.

Unlike many other family terms, 'polit' is generally not used as a polite address head term unless addressing an actual niece or nephew.

In the world of prostitution, pimps, madams and other human traffickers might be euphemistically referred to by their charges as 'noakki', elder aunt or uncle. Pimps and madams in turn might refer to the prostitutes working for them as 'lipólit' or 'cepólit', with a preference to using the gendered terms.
