Skurun is a very ubiquitous as a verb, with a lot of idiomatic meanings. Its most basic meaning is hit or strike, or an instance of hitting or striking. It is more verbal in nature, but is used as a noun as well. It is the paradigm verb for the transitive verbs.

Noun:

Skurun is an instance of hitting or striking someone or something, much like the English word 'a hit'. It can also mean an attempt at something. It can be used as a word for a switch, key (like on a keyboard) or toggle.

Probably based on the meaning of switch or toggle, skurun is also a slang term for clitoris.

The derived terms 'skurunca', 'skuruncahoro' and 'skuruncasyn' mean 'soldier', 'squadron' and 'army' respectively.

The derived form 'skuruncas' in Common grammar refers to the ergative case - it exists alongside the borrowed 'erkatif' used in academic linguistics and to describe other languages.

Medical Conditions:

In  a likely calque from English, 'skurun' is used in noun form is also used to refer to a number of acute medical crises. Examples:

  • Ny skurun na trop - Heart attack
  • Ny skurun na mero - Stroke (brain strike)

These forms can be confusing, because 'ny skurun na trop' could also mean to have a sudden crush on someone, and 'ny skurun na mero' could mean to have a sudden inspiration. To say you're having a heart attack, you would usually use an inalienable possessive construction, such as:

¡Y skurun na trop se an e wen!

To better zero in on the sense of medical crisis, the verb 'taj', 'pain' can be used:

¡Jy skurun na trop te taj we!

This means literally, 'A strike of the heart pains me!'

Verb:

Skurun takes the verbal auxiliary 'te'. It is the paradigm verb for the transitive verbs. As such, it can substituted for any head term in its class when the speaker wishes to omit the head term but be clear about the contextual meaning of the verbal auxiliary.

It is a very ubiquitous verb with a host of meanings. Its most basic meaning is hit or strike. It can also mean to attack. It also has the sense of try or attempt, in which case it can be chained with another verb as a modifying term to apply a sense of trying to enact the main verb. It can mean  to activate something or to toggle a switch.
