Common Lexeme

sino

Keywords: irregular, modifiers, tight binding

Pronunciation (IPA): 'si.no
Part of Speech: modifier
Class: tight binding, intensity
Forms: sino, sinku
Glosses: a little, a bit, slightly

Description:

The modifier 'sino' is the irregular tight-binding form of the modifier 'sinku', attached, which means small or little. Sino is used to modify other modifiers and has the sense of 'a litlte bit', 'a little', or 'slightly'. Although Common lexicographers consider sinku and sino to be forms of the same word, they were separately created by Davidson in the earliest days of the language and thus the relationship is by convention. For that reason and for ease of lookup of the irregular form, sino has its own entry.

Sino is the most typical Common tight binding modifier of diminution, in the 'intensity set' with 'siti' ('somewhat') and 'faj' ('very').
