Description:
'Efonaz' is the Common word for solstice. Old Common had no word for this, and the idea was expressed as 'efo sutta eonaz' or 'efo hitta eonaz'. In the early modern period the terms 'ekwinas' and 'salystys' were coined by borrowing the scientific teens from English. However, these did not prove popular, and the popular coining of 'efonaz', a portmanteau of efo and eonaz, took over and eventually was officially accepted. The borrowed terms are still accepted and sometimes used, however.
