siri

Keywords: internet

Pronunciation (IPA): 'si.ri
Part of Speech: term noun verb
Class: noxaj
Forms: siri, siris
Glosses: net, network, internet, plug in, connect, connected

Description:

The term 'siri' means a net or network, and the internet. It also means a physical net. It is an Old Common word. Notice as a twist, though, that the Common word siri had the implication 'virtual computer network' first and acquired the meaning of a physical net later - Old Common actually lacked a word for a physical net, and the work for computer network was extended metaphorically to encompass it.

Because of that, 'siri' does not have the metaphorical extension of 'to trap or collect' that it would in English based on fishing nets. Insptead, its metaphirical extension is to social networking and to connecting people and things in a network.

Noun:

As a noun, 'siri' is a computer network or by extension a social network. It ca also extend metaphorically to a physical net.

Verb:

As a verb, 'siri' is a noxaj verb meaning to connect the absolutive subject to the dative indirect object - for example, 'we nox siri ija Wicat' would mean 'I am connecting to WeChat'. The causative happat version adds an ergative subject which connects the absolutive object to the dative indirect object. It has the sense of linking in to a network or to a networked thing, and not the sense of just connecting two objects. It can have the sense of plugging something in to a networked power supply (as opposed to a battery).

Modifier:

As a modiifer, 'siris' means something like 'connected' - when describing a person, it means they have a lot of connections or are influential. For an object, it just means it has a connection to the internet.
